Off-Grid Solar Power Installation

A Smart Choice for Kiwi Cabins, Tiny Homes and Rural Pumps

If you’ve got a small dwelling, bach, or water pump out the back of beyond, you’ve probably looked into off-grid solar. And fair enough too – with the rising cost of power and more people choosing to live simply, going off-grid just makes sense.

Whether you’ve got a cabin tucked away on lifestyle land, a tiny house on wheels, or a rural pump system, Tony and the team can help set you up with a tidy solar system that’s reliable, low-maintenance, and tailored to your needs. Here, he takes us through the process.

Why go solar off-grid?

No power bills, no trenching lines hundreds of metres, and no dealing with power companies out in the wops. A solar setup gives you energy independence and works day in, day out – rain or shine. Add a decent battery bank and you’ve got 24/7 power for the essentials.

It’s also ideal for rural stock water systems – solar-powered pumps mean no more hauling generators out to the paddock just to keep the trough full.

My approach

I’ll come out and look at the site, check your sun exposure, and help you figure out what you actually need based on how you’ll be living or using the system. Then I’ll take care of the full install, get everything signed off, and make sure you’re confident running it.

Ballpark costs of off-grid solar?

Off-grid solar technology can range a lot depending on needs, but I would suggest doing some research starting with GridFree systems. In terms of an electrician’s installation costs, DIY-level installs (good for lights and devices) can range from $3-4k and go up to $10,000+ for more complex cabin systems.

Water pump setups vary depending on distance and load, but I’ll always give you detailed advice and a fair quote.

If you're keen to get off-grid the right way, give me a call, or source a kit from GridFree (see below) and I’ll come get it up and running for you.

Recommended off-grid solar kits

GridFree (check them out at gridfree.store) make quality off-grid solar kits that are perfect for Kiwi conditions. I do installations for their customers across Rodney, north Auckland, and surrounds, from basic setups for lighting and charging, to larger kits that’ll run fridges, pumps and tools.

Their kits are solid, easy to expand, and built with good gear, such as Victron, JA Solar, Pylontech batteries. Whether you’ve bought a GridFree kit already or just want to talk options, I can help you plan and install it properly so you’re not left scratching your head with wires and inverters.
