Switchboard Upgrades

Why it might be time to sort yours out

Switchboards are not the flashiest topic, but really important when it comes to keeping your home safe and up to scratch. Tony talks us through why it’s important to upgrade your switchboard.

Old switchboards, especially the ones with fuses or no RCD protection – just don’t cut it anymore. They were built in a different time, for houses that didn’t have heat pumps, EV chargers, induction cooktops, or ten different devices charging at once. If your board’s struggling, you might notice lights flickering, fuses blowing, or tripping when you plug in the kettle. That’s your switchboard crying out for help.

Even more importantly, older gear just isn’t up to modern safety standards. A lot of the old stuff doesn’t have RCDs (Residual Current Devices), which are designed to trip instantly and prevent electric shocks. If your board’s missing those, it’s worth getting sorted – especially if you’ve got young kids around.

Here’s how I approach it.

First, I’ll pop around and do a proper inspection. I’ll check your wiring, your existing setup, and talk you through what’s working – and what’s not. I’m not one to upsell or throw jargon at you. I’ll give it to you straight. If it needs an upgrade, I’ll explain why, what’s involved, and what it’ll cost.

A standard switchboard upgrade usually involves replacing the old board with a new one fitted with modern circuit breakers and RCDs. We’ll tidy up the wiring, label everything properly (none of this “unknown” circuit nonsense), and test everything so it’s all good to go. Depending on your house and what’s involved, you’re typically looking at anywhere from $1,500 to $3,000+ for a full switchboard replacement in Auckland – all up, parts and labour.

Safety and quality are non-negotiable.

Every job I do is fully compliant with NZ electrical regs, and I treat your place like I’d treat my own. I’ll leave things clean, explain what I’ve done, and make sure you’re confident everything’s been done right.

So, if you’re in Waitoki, Dairy Flat, Wainui or anywhere north of Auckland and your switchboard’s seen better days, give me, Tony Davies, a bell. Let’s make sure your place is safe, future-proofed, and running smooth.
