Why Lighting Design Matters When You’re Renovating or Building

If you’re doing up your kitchen, bathroom, a living space, or in the middle of a new house build, lighting probably isn’t the first thing on your mind.

You’re thinking tiles, taps, paint colours, claddings - which is fair enough. But as many interior design specialists (and electricians!) will tell you, good lighting will truly make or break a space. And having a sparky who actually cares about lighting design? That’s where you’ll notice the real difference.

It’s not just about putting lights in the ceiling.

Wiring lights and installing switches? That’s the easy part. But where you position those lights, what kind you choose, the beam angle, and how they work together with the layout and natural light? That’s where planning and an expert eye goes a long way.

I’ve seen too many renos where everything looks fantastic during the day… but as soon as the sun goes down, the place feels flat or overly harsh.

That’s what happens when lighting is an afterthought. Whether it’s a kitchen that needs layered lighting (think task lighting over benches, ambient lighting for mood), or a bathroom that doesn’t cast shadows while you’re shaving or putting on makeup, it pays to get it right.

My approach to lighting design for renovations

When I come on board for a renovation or new build, I don’t just ask where you want the switches. I’ll walk through the space with you, look at how you’re going to use it, where the natural light’s coming in, and how we can make it feel right in the morning, at night, or when you’re entertaining. I like to consider how we can emphasise architectural touches and even furniture placement.

I’m not here to overcomplicate things or sell you fancy lighting plans, just smart, simple ideas and tips that will greatly improve how your home functions and feels. Dimmable LEDs, warm vs cool colour temps, clever switch placement – the small stuff makes a big difference.

Good lighting design can also save you money long-term.

By planning it properly up front, you avoid costly changes later. Plus, energy-efficient fittings and the right placement can actually lower your power bill without sacrificing light quality.

What it comes down to is care.

I like to take the time to get the details right, because you’ve already put time and money into your new space/home, and the lighting should match the quality of everything else you’re trying to achieve.
